About

Background

The Office of Academic Affairs launched the Public and Engaged Scholarship Review Committee (PESRC) in 2020. PESRC is an outgrowth and extension of the Public Scholarship Faculty Learning Community (PSFLC) that conducted work to define public & community engaged scholarship, identify criteria to assist faculty in documenting their community-engaged work, and engage deans and department chairs in adapting criteria into promotion and tenure materials within school and departmental guidelines.

Assuring the success of community-engaged faculty is intimately connected to advancing IUPUI’s change goals for diversity, equity and inclusion. National funders and associations tout the increasing importance of faculty working through mutually beneficial partnerships to address wicked problems, strengthen civic capacities, improve access and retention to higher education among marginalized groups, and/or contribute to social and community change; however, the reality on many campuses is that those committed to the practices of publicly engaged scholarship (PES) often lack access to mentorship as well as peer networks that are knowledgeable and experienced in evaluating the products and processes of engaged scholarship in their units.

Research shows that women, faculty of color and those from other marginalized groups are disproportionately drawn to the work of publicly engaged scholarship. Hence, IUPUI’s work to address barriers to success for engaged scholar-practitioners is part of our institution’s larger commitment to advance equity and diversity.

Membership

The PESRC consists of a multidisciplinary panel of 10 senior, tenured faculty members spanning the IUPUI campus. Committee membership includes faculty with knowledge and expertise spanning the range of practices that characterize public and community-engaged scholarship. In addition, the committee also include members with significant experience in promotion and tenure review at the unit, school and campus levels.

Once recruited, Committee members serve on a two year rotation.
