In 2022, IUPUI received first prize recognition in the National Science Foundation's Taking Action: COVID-19 Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Challenge. The prize came with a $25,000 award, and in fall 2022, we solicited suggestions from the IUPUI community on how best to make use of it.
More than 60 recommendations poured in representing a wide range of ideas. Suggestions were reviewed by faculty and staff from the Office of Academic Affairs, and a predominant theme emerged. The money should be invested in ways that would further strengthen the work on which the award was focused; that is, improving equity and inclusion on our campus for women faculty, and particularly women faculty from historically marginalized backgrounds.
As a result, we are launching EPIC Taking Action Challenge Grants, adapted from the name of our original NSF ADVANCE Grant, Project EPIC, for which EPIC represents "evidence-informed promotion of inclusive climate." Grants must be devoted to programming, conference travel, or other activities aimed at directly or indirectly supporting women faculty at IUPUI, particularly women from marginalized backgrounds, in their professional development and advancement. Examples include participating in the following:
- Faculty Success Program or other related activities through the National Center for Faculty Development and Diversity
- Equity in STEM Community Convening hosted by WEPAN and ARC Network initiative
- Faculty Women of Color in the Academy Conference
- AAC&U TIDES Institute
- AAC&U Project Kaleidoscope (PKAL) STEM Leadership Institute
- HERS Equity-Minded Leadership Series
Applications will be accepted through 2023 and will be reviewed monthly. To apply for funding, please complete the webform below including up to a one-page summary of how the grant would be of benefit to you directly, or to women in your department or program. Typically, grants will be capped at $1,500, and a brief statement of support (ideally accompanied by a pledge of partial financial support) from a dean or department chair is requested.
