A postdoctoral position is intended to be for the benefit of both sides: the postdoc learns skills, and the researcher gets skilled assistance. Because it is a learning experience, it should not be prolonged solely to benefit the researcher.
This procedure applies to non-School of Medicine postdoctoral academic appointees: AC1, RSP.
- It does not apply to those individuals classified as FLP (externally-funded postdoctoral fellows). FLPs follow the rules of their funded program.
- It does not apply to School of Medicine AC1-RSPs. Medicine AC1-RSPs should be referred to the School of Medicine: https://medicine.iu.edu/research/training-programs/postdoctoral/.
Schools can appoint and renew postdoctoral AC1s through their own processes up through the third year.
After the third year, send a request to Office of Academic Affairs at ude[dot]iupui[at]rhdaca.
Include the following information:
- Employee’s name, UID, department, and employee's supervisor name
- Brief description of their position; if a job description was used in recruitment, include the job description
- Brief explanation of how the postdoctoral work continues to be of benefit to the employee’s career development
- Estimate of the total length of the postdoctoral position for this individual
Office of Academic Affairs will give permission for the unit to apply an extension of either one year at a time, or for the total estimated length if it is sufficiently firm. The unit does not need to apply the entire approved extension at that time.
Postdoctoral AC1s may be terminated with notice of one pay period prior to the end of an appointment. If, for example, the Office of Academic Affairs gives permission for an extension of two years (five total) the unit may process a title end date eDoc for six months in the future and repeat if needed.
Consider the appointment option of a research scientist. Like postdoctoral AC1s, their appointment lengths are flexible and are dependent upon funding.
