Department Chair Guidance on Teaching Professor Cases
External Letters
All letters for teaching professor candidates must be external to IUPUI. Up to two may be from other campuses of Indiana University and Purdue University.
Reviewers must be academics, and come from similar or higher-ranked institutions, unless the chair makes a specific case for a specific reviewer because of their expertise. Because the area of excellence is teaching, it is appropriate to select reviewers at teaching-intensive institutions.
Reviewers must be at the teaching-professor or equivalent rank if non-tenure-track, and until 2024, reviewers may also be associate rank if on the tenure-track. Department chairs at the associate rank can write chair letters and vote.
Time in Rank: Through the 2023-2024 cycle:
Time in rank should be judged conceptually rather than applying time in rank as senior lecturer rules: candidates may include accomplishments done while 'lecturers' as well, to demonstrate sustained excellence at the required level.
For questions about documenting teaching, contact the CTL. For campus P&T questions, contact Rachel Applegate at ude[dot]iupui[at]rhdaca.
Reviewed and revised: 6/2023. Time in rank exception originally expired 2023, but was extended one year last year by the IFC.
