Promotion & Tenure
Guidelines
The Dean of the Faculties' Guidelines for Preparing and Reviewing Promotion and Tenure Dossiers are revised annually, based on feedback received during each year's promotion and tenure cycle. Issues and concerns raised by faculty on the IUPUI Promotion and Tenure Committee have resulted in the following updates to the 2011-2012 Guidelines. These updates have been edited in collaboration with the IUPUI Faculty Council Executive Committee.
View the 2011-2012 Guidelines showing substantive changes.
PLEASE NOTE: As of August 2011, a new CV format for faculty on the IUPUI campus was developed and will be incorporated into the 2012-2013 Guidelines. The most recent update based on user feedback was completed in January 2012. There are two different versions available, one where your information can be placed in a table format or a tabbed format. You may also view it as a PDF.
The major changes for this year are:
- A new section, "nine-year Tenure Probationary Timeline for School of Medicine," was created under the "Candidate Responsibilities and Recommended Timeline" section.
- Clarification of the requirement for scholarly dissemination of work to document excellence in any of the three areas of faculty work; to document highly satisfactory in each area of a balanced case, as well as assessment of satisfactory in research.
For your convenience, beginning in May, the appendix documents found in the 2011-2012 Guidelines may be accessed as individual documents below in the Resources section. The forms may be typed then printed, signed and added to dossiers as needed. (Not all dossiers will require all forms.)
Any comments, questions, or suggestions for future revisions of this document should be sent to Mary Fisher.
Deadlines
Faculty submit dossiers for promotion and/or tenure to their department/school. As deadlines vary from one academic unit to another, faculty should contact their department/school directly for submission deadlines.
For campus level review, units/schools need to submit an original hard copy dossier and one electronic copy for each candidate no later than Friday, October 28, 2011 to the Dean of the Faculties via Faculty Appointments and Advancement (FAA).
If extenuating circumstances exist, a request for a time extension should be sent by Friday, September 30, 2011 to the Assistant Dean of the Faculties for approval. Within one week of the extension being approved, the following information for each candidate must be sent electronically to ofaa@iupui.edu:
- First, Middle and Last name;
- University ID Number;
- Area of Excellence;
- Type of Review (promotion, tenure or both); and
- Title Sought (does not apply to tenure only candidates).
Under no circumstances will the deadline extend beyond Wednesday, November 23, 2011. Dossiers submitted late (i.e., after November 23, 2011) or not submitted in accord with the guidelines set forth by the Dean of the Faculties may be returned and consideration deferred until the following year.
