New Faculty Experience
We would like to welcome you, a new Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) faculty member, to campus. During the next several months much of your time will be allocated to navigating the campus, the politics of your department, and IUPUI policies and procedures. We realize that your journey will be unique due to the type of appointment you hold, your background, and experience. Therefore, we have created an entire community of support to meet all of your new faculty needs.
Listed below you will find various events and resources that we hope you find helpful during your first year on campus.

Events
In the fall, around the start of the 2011-2012 academic year, there are some welcome events that you are invited to attend.
New Faculty Welcome
The 2011 New Faculty Experience will begin on Wednesday, August 17, 2011 with a welcoming address by Chancellor Charles Bantz and Executive Vice-Chancellor and Dean of the Faculties Uday Sukhatme. This event is an opportunity for new faculty to learn about what it takes to thrive at IUPUI from campus leaders. Our intention is to engage you in conversation on the most important aspects of your work at IUPUI - research, teaching, and service.
New Faculty Reception
On September 26, 2011, Chancellor Charles Bantz invites all new appointees to join him and Dr. Sandra Petronio for a reception at Cedar Crest, the Chancellor's official residence. The Chancellor and his wife look forward to getting to know new members of the IUPUI community. Invitations are being sent electronically to new appointees. Register for the event.
Associate Faculty Orientation
We welcome faculty with part-time appointments to join us for two evenings of discovery, reflection, and learning. You'll find something for you, whether you have taught before or are new to the classroom. The interactive sessions will cover a variety of teaching topics, and you will find something new, exciting, and useful. Topics will include: basics of using Oncourse; advanced functions of Oncourse; working with disruptive students; teaching and classroom resources at IUPUI; grading efficiently and fairly; and motivating students. Sessions differ by evening, so feel free to attend one or both dates. For more information, contact the Center for Teaching and Learning at 317-274-1300.
IUPUI 1st International Faculty Orientation
Program goals:
- Identify features of U.S. academic and classroom culture;
- Use English effectively in presentations and classroom discussions;
- Implement strategies for managing classroom communications and establishing connections with American students;
- Become familiar with IUPUI resources relevant to teaching, culture, and language learning.
IUPUI faculty members will present the above themed sessions. A panel of international faculty will follow up with the sessions by sharing their experiences within U.S. academic settings and offer suggestions. Coffee and refreshments will be served. Co-sponsored by the IUPUI Office of International Affairs and the Center for Teaching and Learning.
Faculty Enrichment Opportunities
There are many workshops, discussions and presentations on campus of interest to faculty members. Here are a few we think will be of particular interest to new faculty.
The Cutting Edge Lecture Series invites Leading IUPUI professors to share their expertise and insights regarding the applications of their current research endeavors, with a particular emphasis on engaging non-specialists, including faculty and students from schools across IUPUI.
